Bing Xin is a renowned writer and translator in modern literary history. Recentlyher achievements in translation have l received more and more attention. Manyarticles are focused on her contribution and translation views. However, fewresearches are conducted on how she makes creative treason due to the cultural andlinguistic gap between the source and target system, on translator’s subjectivity andon translation purpose. Actually, her unique translation style cannot be simplyclassified into domestication or foreignization. Her wide popularity comes from hercreative translating and her concern about the target readers.Mediology rising from1970s provides solid theoretical framework for the studyof Bing Xin’s translation. Mediology introduces the concept of creative treason andputs the text in an open framework in which both translator and readers’ creativetreason can give the text a new life. Creative treason reveals the phenomenon ofcollision, exclusion and fusion during the process of translation when the original textis introduced into the target-language environment. Meanwhile, the phenomenon ofcreative treason can be fully analyzed and explained in the framework of readers’response. Such key concepts in Reception Theory as horizon of expectation, aestheticdistance can be employed to explain the phenomenon of creative treason in poetrytranslation.Proceeding from Bing Xin’s translation of Gitanjali, this paper conducts microand macro researches on her translation by incorporating readers’ response, discussingthe characteristics of creative treason in Bing Xin’s translation and exploringstrategies she adopted in order to meet the expectation of the target readers. On themicro level, the paper conducts a descriptive analysis of creative treason in Bing Xin’stranslation from literary, linguistic and cultural perspective. On the macro level, thepaper focuses on analyzing translation strategies adopted by the translator and theinfluence of the strategies on target readers’ reception, making use of readers’response to explain her translation purpose. This paper makes a research on creative treason and strategies adopted by BingXin in her translation of Gitanjali to facilitate its reception in the target culturalenvironment from the perspective of readers’ reception. It aims on one hand toanalyze the reasons why Bing Xin’s translation of Gitanjali has been so popular andon the other side to provide materials to the study of Bing Xin as a translator and theholistic research on creative treason of English poetry translation from the perspectiveof readers’ response..
