A Study On "Zenme A Zenme B"

Taking the theory of "Three Angles""Grammaticalization""Construction Grammar" and so on as the guidelines, and on the basis of abundant instances which are collected from the Corpus of Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU (CCL), this paper makes a comprehensive study of the structure "zen me A zen me B". It includes five parts and the contents can be summarized as followings.The foreword Part is the introduction. It briefly reviews the co-occurrence of interrogative pronouns and the co-occurrence of interrogative pronoun "zen me", restricts the object of the study, shows the significance of the study and points out the methodology.The first part illustrates the formal features of the structure "zen me A zen me B", including the combination types of co-occurrence items and the forms of the whole structure which can be divided into typical form and atypical form.The second part analyzes the referential meaning of the structure "zen me A zen me B", tries to find the factors that lead to the appearance of referential meaning of co-occurrence interrogative pronouns. It explains the three relations of co-occurrence items called conditional relation, suppositional relation and unconditional relation. The part points out the syntactic components of A and B, which can be predicative components, nominal components, auxiliary verbs and zero.The third part discusses the pragmatic values of the structure "zen me A zen me B", which shows chain, generality, subjectivity and indirection. The pragmatic characteristics are also displayed here.The last part is the conclusion, which identifies the problems unsolved and therefore need further exploration.
