Potential complement is widely used in contemporary Chinese language. It isambiguous in semanteme. The research on this is fruitful. In this paper, based on theresearch of the predecessors, we used correlated theory and plentiful linguistic fact to gointo the three forms of the potential complement, the semantic kind of the meaning of“potential”, and the interdependence between the meaning of “potential” and the form of“potential”. The full text is divided into four chapters:The first Chapter is introduction, in which the purpose and meaning of the selectedtopic, the research status on the grammar, semantics and pragmatics of the three forms ofthe potential complement, the extraction of semantics from “potential” meaning by thepredecessors, the object of study and the origin of the supported corpus is introduced. In Chapter two, three possible forms of the potential complement is elucidated inclassified way. This chapter includes the composition and semantics character of the V andthe C in “V de/bu C”, the form category of “V de/bu liao” and the similarities anddifferences between when V is a verb or an adjective. At last, the category, structuralmeaning of“V de/bu de”and the reason for the asymmetric positive and negative formats isdiscussed. The third Chapter is an inspection on the meaning of “potential”. At first, the modallogic and related “potential” in modality is teased and extracted. Then the semantic kind ofthe meaning of “potential” is differentiated based on the research of the predecessors, which mainly include potential (ability), potential (condition), potential (permission) andpotential (cognition). Furthermore, a higher degree divide is made according to thedifferent emphasis on every “potential” semantic.Based on the third Chapter, the fourth Chapter analysis the form of the potentialcomplement correspond to every “potential” meaning, and the interdependence betweenthe meaning and modality, for example, the character of V,C, the position and property ofthe subject, whether have an object or quantity complement, and the transformation of the sentence, is discussed.
