This paper focuses on learner’s Chinese dictionary and the need of Chinese learners by studying existed ones and surveying on learners to find what they want, and put forward the urgency of new generation dictionary and its characteristic.As the economy and politics develop in China, the Chinese language and culture also weigh more, promoting the popularity of Chinese learning, and abundant need for Chinese teachers, books and dictionaries. However, important as the dictionary is, there is seldom a dictionary that can meet learners’needs. Thus we should compile one that suits to them.The study is done by three steps under the framework of lexicography, as well as cognitive linguistics, second language acquisition theory, semantics, corpus linguistics:First, it analyses the strong and weak points of existed Chinese dictionaries, learner’s Chinese dictionaries, learner’s English dictionaries and some digital dictionaries.Second, it finds the difficulties met by Chinese learners and their expectation of the dictionary in future through survey and observation.Third, it compares several most recommended digital dictionaries and points to their advantages and shortcomings.On the basis of the study above, this paper proposes the urgency and characteristic of the new generation dictionary:firstly, it should lay most importance on the user, and the content must meet the requirement of the learner; secondly, the explanation should be easily understood with efficient information, accompanied by example phrases and sentences, as well as usage and cultural background to make it generative; last but not least, it should be fast and friendly to use, easier to enter and search and more flexible to operate, with multi-media technology and friendly interface, making it more interesting and efficient.
