This study sought to investigate the effect of peer evaluation in college English writing class. Two main questions were addressed:1. What are students’attitudes towards peer evaluation?2. What are the effects of peer evaluation on college English writing teaching?80students from Liaoning Technical University were involved in this study. They were divided into two groups. During the study, two questionnaires and four writing tasks were assigned to them. In the process of the study, students of the experimental group (EG) reveived some instructions on peer evaluation and then they got involved in the revising activity. After the experiments, amount of mistakes found out by the students and the teacher were compared. Also being compared were students scores from the four writing tasks. Finally,20students of the experimental group took part in an interview.Research findings show:1. Most of the students hold positive view on peer evaluation after experiencing it;2. Students can give feedback to most of the grammar mistakes and almost all the vocabulary mistakes;3. The key to the improvement of students’writing ability mainly lies on their attitudes. Revisers can only play a subsidiary role. Results of the study indicate that peer evaluation can make positive influence on students’English writing ability and is practical in the teaching process. It might lighten teachers’burden and at the same time reinforce students’ mastering of knowledge.Hopefully this study will give teachers and researchers more enlightenment, hence rouse more emphasis on peer evaluation and reach the ultimate goal to promote the effectiveness of teaching.
