| The present paper studies the calligraphy of Huang Tingjian in banishment in Bashu.Huang Tingjian has been stayed in Bashu for about six years since arrived in Qian Zhou on April 23 of the second year of Shao Sheng (1095) to March 29 of the first year of Jian Zhong Jing Guo (1101). During this period, he went to Qian Zhou from Fu Zhou, and then settled down in Rong Zhou, with some calligraphy contacts and travelling fatigue in life and work. However, just being with the experience, his calligraphy style realized a leap from the "alterable but not skillful" to "forming an individual style" successfully. There exist different opinions on Huang Tingjian’s calligraphy contacts and handwriting style of this period in contemporary study of the history of calligraphy. This paper discusses and corrects the mistakes in the contemporary study of the calligraphy of Huang Tingjian, by regarding the trackway of Huang Tingjian in banishment in Bashu, referring to the historical materials of Song Dynasty, and combing his actual experience.Huang Tingjian made an important contribution on the development of calligraphy and painting fields. His calligraphy style has typical characteristics. In order to grasp the whole lines of the development of the calligraphy of Huang Tingjian in banishment in Bashu and explore his experience on calligraphy contacts, it is necessary to find and collate the historical materials of that period, such as relevant poems, calligraphy contacts, handwriting works, letters, and so on. Then, the origin of Huang Tingjian from "watching the boatman rowing for a long time" to "the method of using the brush" should be explained objectively for revealing the authenticity and historical inevitability of the formation of Huang Tingjian’s periodical calligraphy style. |
