Ling Huchu is an important member in the field of politics in the middle and late Tang Dynasty and enjoys a high reputation of "eminent writer of the generation" in literature. His great achievements in both politics and literature are honored by numerous scholars. He is related to almost all significant political events in the middle and late Tang Dynasty. Therefore the writing of the memorials to the throne becomes an indispensable part in his political life. The memorial to the throne is regarded as the style that represents most the literary achievements of Ling Huchu, either from the number or the influence.This paper analyzes the memorials to the throne of Ling Huchu from their influence, literary characteristics, achievements, status and their influence to the writing of memorials to the throne by Li Shangyin who is a famous litterateur in the late Tang Dynasty. It consists of four chapters. The first chapter explains the basic concepts of the memorials to the throne by Ling Huchu, based on which it investigates his memorials to the throne. Memorial to the throne is a kind of writing style closely related to politics. His memorials to the throne directly record and reflect the disordered political struggle in the middle and late Tang Dynasty. The second chapter examines the memorials to the throne of Ling Huchu in the complex political setting in the middle and late Tang Dynasty and investigates his behaviors in a series of political events and his relationship with important persons at that time from the transition of his political life and the writing coherence of his memorials to the throne. Therefore, a relatively objective and reasonable evaluation is drawn concerning Ling Huchu himself and his role in the historical struggle at that time. The memorials to the throne of Ling Huchu are not only profound in their political influence, but also unique in literature. The third chapter summarizes Ling Huchu’s attainments on the rhythmical proses characterized by parallelism and ornateness from the aspect of writing skills, based on the four elements of matching, literary quotation, rhythm and embellishment of rhythmical prose. As for the general writing style, the collected works of Ling Huchu are characterized by conciseness, delicacy, archaism in diction, rich emotion and prose momentum, which contributes a lot to the reformation and development of the memorials to the throne under the movement of ancient style prose in the middle and late Tang Dynasty.The influence of Ling Huchu to the memorials to the throne not only lies in his writing, but also in his cultivation of a great master of memorials to the throne, Li Shangyin, in the late Tang Dynasty. The paper discusses Ling Huchu’s influence on Li Shangyin’s writing from six aspects, namely style, techniques, emotion, rhetoric, discourse organization and political attitude, which helps us to explore deeper the value of Ling Huchu’s memorials to the throne.The paper finally analyzes the status and influence of Ling Huchu’s memorials to the throne, summarizes them from politics and literature, and tries to restore the contribution and status of Ling Huchu’s memorials to the throne at that time, in order to make a precise and reasonable evaluation on his influence.
