| This thesis discussed a protest caused by the boycott of a film named Welcome Danger which self-direction by an American actor Harold Lloyd. This protest last almost8months, from February to October in1930in Shanghai. And Welcome Danger had been pointed out that has an intent of insult to China. In this paper believe that Welcome Danger had been described as a discrimination of China is because of during this period, China and the United States perceived two different images of Chinese people, and these two images have a deep contradiction. American still discriminate Chinese, especially overseas Chinese, In American public, a severely distorted even demonized image of Chinese people is very popular, and this image reflects to many American movies including Welcome Danger. Along with the establish of the Nanjing Government, China’s international status had raised, the nationalist sentiment had up surged too. So to the Chinese the image of Chinese in American film is no longer unbearable, the boycott occurred naturally.Government punished2theaters named DaGuangMi and GuangLu which screened Welcome Danger, then comprehensive ban the screen of Welcome Danger, at last forced Lloyd do an apology to all the Chinese, this is the end of the event. This resolution also promotes the legislative process of Chinese film. China has regained the right to interpret its own image on the legal level. However be noted that through the entire incident, from the national to the government are involved in a boycott of the struggle, but they don’t distinct a national image, so the Chinese people cognitive nationals image is still fuzzy and unclear at the beginning of the1930s. |
