In western music, the flute can be used in various settings including solo and ensemble settings with piano, harp, and an entire orchestra. It is most frequently used as one of the highest pitched voices amongst the woodwinds of the orchestra. The thesis takes the flute melody in Daphnis et Chloe Suite No.2as the main object in order to study attributes of the flute in the orchestral setting. I try to explore composition and performance of the flute in western orchestral music through score analysis and observations of live performances. The thesis is composed of three parts to be dissertated, including the development and history of the flute, application of the flute in an orchestra (especially in Daphnis et Chloe), and composition for the flute in different time periods.
