Study On Translator’s Subjectivity In The Translation Of American Notes

Since the "cultural turn" of translation studies in1970s, translational schools have paid more of their attention to the subjectivity of translator. Since then, studies on the subjectivity of translator from different perspectives have been emerging.The author of this dissertation has translated Chapter5to Chapter7of American Notes written by Rudyard Kipling as the premiere version, following which a comprehensive analysis on the subjectivity of translator has been made in the aspects of constraints and initiative on the basis of practice. With analysis of the translating process and translated text, classification and explanation of typical translating difficulties, the author attempted to explore effective ways to tackle translation challenges to achieve a satisfying target text, and expect the research findings be valuable to practical translation and other studies on the subjectivity of translator.This dissertation is composed of six chapters. The first one is an introduction which represents brief information of the source text, the writer, and the background and purpose of the study on it. Chapter Two is an introduction of studies on translator’s subjectivity, with an emphasis on the perspective of somatics of translation. The third chapter is a description of the translating process and principles applied. Chapter Four analyzes the constraints of translator’s subjectivity in translation. Chapter Five is the analysis of initiative of translator’s subjectivity in translation. Chapter Six is the conclusion. An appendix of both the source and translated text are enclosed.
