A Study On The Conflicts And Integration Between American And Chinese Cultures In Joy Luck Club From Intercultural Communication Perspective

Intercultural communication theory holds that in the intercultural communication theory, culture plays an important role in communication. People born in a certain social cultural environment, are deeply influenced by the very cultural environment in which they are born, and thus form the corresponding values and ways of thinking. Two different cultures usually conflict with each other when they first meet and gradually compromise and integrate with one another eventually. This paper analyzes Joy Luck Club, written by Chinese American writer Amy Tan from the perspective of intercultural communication. And found that from the process of contradiction to understanding between mother and daughter in this work, we can see the process from the conflict to integration between American and Chinese cultures, the first chapter introduces the research background, purpose significance, research methods and the structure of this paper. The second chapter introduces the relevant intercultural communication theory, including Hofstede’s values dimension, the values orientation of Kluckhohn&Strodtbeck,and the theory of Hall’s strength communication environment culture. The third chapter explores the process from conflict to fusion between mother and daughter who are the representatives of two different cultures in this work Joy Luck Club-western and eastern cultures. The fourth chapter analyzes the conflict and fusion between American and Chinese cultures from the intercultural communication perspective, mainly introducing the multicultural environment of the United States, and analyzed the inevitability of conflict and fusion of American and Chinese cultures in the world of globalization. The fifth chapter is the summery of the whole paper. Remind people in today’s globalization environment to set up the correct view of intercultural communication, cultivating strong ability of intercultural communication, without denying the mother cultures. And spread the traditional Chinese culture when learning the excellent cultures from all over the world.
