Since China’s reform and opening up, especially after China’s entry into WTO, China hasmade great progress in her exchanges and cooperation with countries around the world, whichhas greatly promoted the innovation in the cultivation of English postgraduates. At the same time, translation studies have boomed in response to the trend of the times. Currently, translationstudies have gradually become one of the major orientations in the cultivation of Englishpostgraduates. However, according to the author’s investigation, no one at home has made anyanalysis or summary towards English postgraduates’ translation studies so far. Therefore, through an analysis of the theses published by English postgraduates related to the translationstudies of Hong Lou Meng, the author hopes that the deficiency of the research could beremedied.By combining diachronic study and synchronic study, as well as quantitative study andqualitative study together, the thesis makes an analysis of the456theses published by Englishpostgraduates related to the translation studies of Hong Lou Meng. The study is carried out fromfive aspects, namely, the underlying trend of English postgraduates’ translation studies of HongLou Meng, English versions involved in English postgraduates’ study, research methodsemployed by English postgraduates’ study, research objects of English postgraduates’ study andtheories applied in English postgraduates’ study. The research findings are as follows. Generally speaking, the translation studies of HongLou Meng made by English postgraduates increased rapidly from1999to2010; the Yangs’ andthe Hawkes’ English versions attract most of the postgraduates’ attention; the qualitative study isthe main research method, and the theses with quantitative method occupy only a small part ofthe whole; culture and language are the two main objects of the translation studies; most of thetheses make studies under the guidance of theories from translatology and linguistics, and asmall part of the theses with theories from other disciplines. While clarifying the status quo of English postgraduates’ translation studies of Hong LouMeng, the author hopes that this thesis can serve as guidance for later-postgraduates who areinterested in the translation studies of Hong Lou Meng. In the author’s opinion, more attentionought to be given to other versions instead of only the two versions; meanwhile, it is hoped thatlater-postgraduates could combine qualitative research and quantitative research together for ascientific result; moreover, the translation studies on culture and language should be improved inwidth and depth; and last but not least, the translation studies from interdisciplinary perspectiveneed to be strengthened, and it is suggested that later-postgraduates should take domestic translation theories into fully consideration and apply them into translation studies.
