| Popper’s musical attainments impact his construction of philosophical ideas profoundly. The objectivity of Bachian music which is experienced by Popper enlightens Popper’s objective knowledge idea which is proposed by Popper in depth. If the Beethoven’s musical style gives expression to subjectivity appeal, Bachian music is sober and reason with objectivity. Popper’s objective knowledge is based on the partition of three kinds of worlds. As the third world, the objective knowledge has objectivity, autonomy and non-subject, they have the isomorphic relationship with the Bachian music. The connection between objective knowledge and Bachian music provides an illustrative case for commensuration each other in a certain sense in art and philosophy. This thesis starts with the history of western music and the history of influence to Popper from musical idea, and investigates the contexts and features of the development of western music in brief. On this basis, it also analyses the different music styles and the reasons between Bach and Beethoven, and then discusses the classification and preference about these two kinds of music by Popper. After that, this thesis seeks how the objectivity rules behind the Bachian music influence Popper’s theory of objective knowledge deeply by the historical perspective. It also discusses whether this effect is occasional or necessary. On this basis, the procedure is launched describing from Bachian music to Popper’s objective knowledge. Popper himself explicitly mentioned the two kinds of music in his autobiography, and he also expressed the preference on Bachian music. Popper thought that Bachian music had very important impact on his objective knowledge theory, but he never elaborated how the influence was realized logically. On that account, this thesis tries to explore the logic relationship about the thoughts behind Bach and Popper through the surface on the Bachian music and Popper’s theory of objective knowledge. This thesis also criticizes Popper’s objective knowledge who pays more attention on the objectivity than subjectivity from Polanyi’s personal knowledge, and therefore, it could uncover the limit that Popper could not read the emotion world from Bachian music and that how the limit acts on the construction of Popper’s theory of objective knowledge. Thereby, it can provide enlightenment for fair to evaluate Popper’s objective knowledgeThe investigation from the intellectual history between Popper’s objective knowledge and Bachian music, from the original aspect about aesthetic, requires us to grasp the cultural background, especially the artistic backgrounds that the philosophy thoughts’constructions depended on from the impact of aesthetic approach. This is the conclusion of this paper. |
