A Study On The Substitution Function Of The Phenomenon Of Substitution And Pronouns

A great deal of research has been done on pronouns and other linguistic phenomena of substitution. Pronouns usually be seen as a grammatical form of substitution. Based on the conception of the substitution, the thesis investigates the common linguistic phenomenon of substitution and summarizes the principles, and on the backgroung of the above, the characteristics on substitution of pronouns were analyzed comparatively. We clarified that the substitution function of pronouns were generated in the use of the language. Pronouns are not general forms of substitution but have unique features of their own.There are five parts in the thesis:Chapter one has a summary of the research on pronouns and other linguistic phenomena of substitution, and points out the thinking of this research and the study methods.Chapter two defines the conception of "substitution" and analyzes the eight common linguistic phenomena of substitution:honorifics; euphemisms; enigmatic words; nickname; metonymy; clipped words; quantitative construction; de construction;Chapter three inducts the principles and characteristics about the eight phenomena of substitution. The emphasis is to study the substitution of pronouns and summarize the connections and differences.Chaper four discusses the characteristics on substitution of pronouns, and proposes that the substitution functions of pronouns were generated in the use of the language. They are not the substitution forms of other words but have the unique characteristics of their own.Chapter five concluding remarks.
