Among various forms of interpretation, consecutive interpretation maybe imposethe greatest pressure on interpreter’s short-term memory. To alleviate the pressure ofthis kind, interpreters can resort to notes and use various kinds of mnemonictechnique to help remind themselves of the past message. Compared with the latter, the former is more important and can better ensure the efficiency and accuracy of thetask. Rozan is the first scholar who systematically elaborates the note-taking inconsecutive interpretation. Since then many reasearches have been done onnote-taking, including many empirical studies. Yet little attention has been paid to thepsychological state of interpreters when he or she takes notes since consecutiveinterpretation is a time-pressing coginitive effort. It is necessary to pore over everyelusive pyschological change and according adjustment so as to know the very natureof every decision made by the interpreter. Until then discussion about note-taking canbe more scientific.Drawing on the knowledge of information processing and cognitive psychology, this thesis aims to delve into the psychology and information processing ofconsecutive interpreter. Two hyotheses are suggested: interpreter’s notes are a mixtureof source language, target language and symbols, with source language as itsdominant language; interpreters undergo different psycological experiences whentaking notes in source language, target language and symbols, and interpreting them. For this matter, three mental models of consecutive interpretation are proposed tooffer a framework for discussion, namely, mental model for consecutive interpretationfacilitated by notes in source language, that for CI supported by notes in targetlanguage and that for CI cued by notes in symbols. The experiment is done to test thetwo hyotheses and three mental models. In analysing period, Cool-Edit2.0will beused grasp the elusive difference of each index.
