With its refined dictions, compact form and variegated rhyme, poetry delivers literati’s and poet’s thoughts and emotions. It also conveys a nation’s history, culture and literature tradition. Chinese poetry goes through dynasty changes and vicissitudes, and it becomes highly imagery concentrated. As one indispensible part of global culture, one needs to apply the translation theory which is capable of presenting the characteristics of Chinese classic poetry so as to usher this literary form into world and enrich the world culture.As a master of translation, Professor Xu Yuanchong contributes a lot to the development of Chinese translation theory as well as the translation practice. He is one of the most important figures who introduce Chinese classic poetry to the global stage. On the basis of absorbing and enriching the translation theories of previous translators, he establishes a comparatively systematic literature translation theory structure. The translated versions of the Chinese classic poetry under this theory system effectively transmit the beauty and the literature form of Chinese classic poetry.This thesis will briefly introduce the nature of poetry, the transmission of beauty, Professor Xu Yuanchong and his translation theories. Moreover, this thesis attaches more importance on chapter three to take Professor Xu Yuanchong’s beauty in three aspects as the guidance and different versions as cases, and adopts descriptive approach to do an objectively trial analysis and appreciation, so that this thesis may leave some space to reflect on the rationality of Professor Xu Yuanchong’s theories as the benchmark in the C-E translation of Chinese classic poetry.Since there are comparatively systematic translation theories, we can employ them as a benchmark to analyze and appreciate the different translation versions which are done by other translators; we also can search what is lost and what is transmitted in the process of translating Chinese classic poetry. Moreover, through the comparison of different versions, the instructive function and applicability of Xu’s theory will be evaluated and presented, thus poetry translation can be pushed forward. By doing so, it is also possible to make more readers with different culture backgrounds know Chinese classic poetry and this literature form as well as the loaded culture in it.
