A Study On Translator’s Subjectivity In The English Version Of Thunderstorm From George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Perspective

Translation is a complex communicative act. The translator plays an irreplaceable andindispensable role in the translation process. The traditional translation theory regarded“faithfulness” as the standard to judge a translated text, and believed that the translator shouldnot show his/her presence in the translated text. As the most active factor in the translationprocess, the translator shows his/her subjectivity during the understanding of the original textand the process to recreate the source text into target text. The “culture turn” in translationstudy in the1970s emancipated the translator from “fettered dancer”. The role and the statusof the translator have been paid more and more attention to by the translation theorists, andthe study on the translator’s subjectivity became a hot subject in the translation studies.Hermeneutics, as a theory of understanding and interpreting of the meaning, provides thestudy of the translator’s subjectivity with a new perspective. The thesis probes into how thetranslator’s subjectivity is manifested in the English version of Thunderstorm from theperspective of George Steiner’s hermeneutic translation motion theory, namely, trust,aggression, incorporation and compensation. The systematical study of translator’ssubjectivity in this thesis will have meaningful reference for later translation researches.
