In recent years, translation studies on George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Motion Theorymainly focus on the application of the various aspects of the theory, while the researcheson the theory itself are extremely rare. In view of this, this thesis tries to analyze theontology of thetheory systematically in order to understandthe theory comprehensively.According to the application of George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Motion Theoryamong the scholars at home and abroad, this thesis put forward the questions as follows:(a) how is the basic situation on the application of the theory among the scholars at homeand abroad?(b) What are the advantages and disadvantages in the Hermeneutic MotionTheory?(c) How to make tentative adjustments to the theory?Firstly, the thesis probes into the application of the theory among scholars at homeand abroad. By employing the comparison method, the thesis points out that it haspractical advantages and existing disadvantages. Then, the thesis concludes that theHermeneutic Motion Theory has the following advantages: Covering the wholetranslation process; Breaking the myth of “faithfulness”; Embodying translators’subjectivity. The theory also concludes the results of the rethought of the subject: Nolimit for interpretation of original texts; Affecting the limit of translation subject; Leadingto much more “mis-reading”; Weak explaining power for the scientific texts. As for thethird question, having considered that the adjustments or compensation for the theorywould be put forward according to the limitations of the theory, the author combines thetwo points together:(a)Trust: from single direction and single dimension tomulti-directions and multi-dimensions;(b) From abstract aggression to specificaggression;(c) From incorporation to incorporation and abandonment;(d) Fromcompensation to balance and compensation;(e)Reorganization and expression.
