A Study On Interpreting Styles From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

This thesis studies interpreting styles from the perspective of adaptation theory inorder to analyze how to appropriately choose the suitable style in the dynamic processof communication happening in different interpreting occasions. Given these analyseswith concrete examples, the author aims to show to the readers how choice making ofinterpreting styles is actually carried out and how interpreting learners andpractitioners can master the skill of choosing the appropriate style suitable for thespecific interpreting activity they are engaged in. Therefore, this thesis takesinterpreting styles as its study focus in the hope that it can first enrich the presentstudies on interpreting styles and then draw more attention to the study of interpretingstyles, which the author thinks is important to qualified and appropriate interpretingunder different circumstances.Generally speaking, this study aims at the following objectives: theoretically,1.to give a bird-view of the previous studies on interpreting styles, point out thelimitations of previous studies in terms of both quantities and qualities andcomplement the insufficiency of previous studies;2. to show how interpreting styleswork and what is required of under different circumstances and the adaptability ofadaptation theory in studying interpreting styles;3. pragmatically, to trigger theinterpreters’ awareness of interpreting styles and thus improve their interpretingquality. Besides, this study also hopes that interpreting styles can be taken as anevaluation factor for later interpreting researchers and practitioners.
