German Functionalist Approach To Tourist Text Translation

In recent years, with the rapid development of tourism industry in China, more and more foreign tourists have been attracted by our magnificent natural scenery, long history and profound cultural accumulation. As one of the attractive scenic spots in Shanxi province, Pingyao ancient city enjoys great reputation at home and abroad. However, the translation of tourist texts in Pingyao ancient city is far from satisfactory:the errors and mistakes can still be found in the tourist texts. Therefore, the in-depth study of Chinese-English tourism translation is in urgent need. As an effective channel to offer foreigners with traveling information, tourist texts play a role of paramount importance. A well-translated tourist text should be attractive to foreign visitors so as to promote the development of tourism.Under the guidance of German functionalist translation theory, the author first makes a revision of the representatives and their main ideas and points out the significance of the functionalist theory to tourism translation. Based on the analysis of Chinese-English translation of Pingyao ancient city, the author puts forward the factors which should be taken into consideration, and also points out the applicable methods in tourist text translation.In the thesis, the author tires to explore effective strategies for tourist text translation in Pingyao ancient city. It is sincerely hoped that the thesis can provide a reference for the improving of tourism translation of Pingyao, and initiate the future study of more effective and practical translation strategies.
