Jiaozhou Yang-ge, a famous local folk dancing performance in Jiaozhou,Shandong Peninsular, is also named as “Di Yang-ge”,“Pao Yang-ge” and “JiaozhouDa Yang-ge,” It is a kind of Northern Yang-ge in China, a combination of forksinging-and-dancing operetta. Since Qing Dynasty, Jiaozhou Yang-ge has been widelypopular in the area of Jiaozhou, Shandong Province, with a wide influence on the artand culture in China. As a popular cultural activity, Jiaozhou Yang-ge has a longhistory and rich cultural connotations. In2006, Jiaozhou Yang-ge was included in thefirst batch of National intangible cultural heritage protection projects of China.In recent years, with the fast development of China’s social economy andimprovement of people’s material life and richness of cultural recreational activities,the performance space of Jiaozhou Yang-ge shrunk its significantly. At the same time,due to the transformation of mass entertainment and spiritual civilization, Yang-ge’sown direction of development (reflects the local people’s living aspirations and thelocal manners and feelings,) gradually moved away from its aspirations. JiaozhouYang-ge has gradually transformed from the seasonal recreation activity (which camefrom the spontaneousness of the local people) into an organized artistic activity whichfocus on the efficiency and culture.This article is intended to understand the cultural connotations of temporal andspatial changes of Jiaozhou Yang-ge, with the methods of historical geography andcultural studies. Through analyzing its development history, we can discover theenduring process of Jiaozhou Yang-ge and its inherent cultural values; throughanalyzing the issues and reasons of misunderstanding of its values in the nowadayssociety, we can realize the importance of protecting and developing Jiaozhou Yang-ge currently faced.This article includes the following contents: first of all, it expresses the basicconcept and art features from its manifestation of Jiaozhou Yang-ge, then lead to theircultural study of time-space. Based on the collection and analysis of JiaozhouYang-ge’s literature data, especifically from the context of its historical development,we can approach the comprehensive, systematic, and logical ways of its changes.Combined the consideration Yang-ge’s current situation with the knowledge of theintangible cultural heritage, some suggestions of reasonable and effective protectionand development of Yang-ge have been put forward.In this article, the first chapter introduces the significance of the research ofJiaozhou Yang-ge and the research methods used. The second chapter describes thecultural connotations and manifestation of Jiaozhou Yang-ge. The third chapterexplores the historical changes of Jiaozhou Yang-ge. Social and cultural functions ofJiaozhou Yang-ge has been interpreted in the fourth chapter. Fifth chapter analyzes thecontemporary development and changes of Jiaozhou Yang-ge. The last chapterevaluates the misunderstandings of development and protection of Jiaozhou Yang-ge,and also make recommendation of its heritage importance according to the method ofnon-material cultural heritage. The conclusion is a summarization of the researchresults.
