A Comparative Study Of Two Chinese Versions Of Tess Of The D’ Urbervilles From The Perspectives Of Translators’Subjectivity

In recent years, translator’subjectivity is a term that is paid much more attentions in translation studies and turns a new page in this field. With the establishment of the position of translator’s subjectivity, its function in translating process is taken more and more seriously by the translation researchers. In addition, Tess of the D’Urbervilles is one of the best novel in the world created by Thomas Hardy. On the comparison study of the Chinese versions of Zhang Guruo and Sun Fali, this thesis intends to explore the manifestation of the translator’s subjectivity and unearth the differences and the reasons for the differences from the perspective of the translator’s subjectivity.This thesis begins with a history of the research on the subjectivity of translator, and a review of the viewpoints on translator’s subjectivity in traditional translation theories as well as the development on this research. The thesis discusses the definition of subjectivity in western philosophy, subjectivity and translation subjectivity, translator’s identity, the construction and presentation of translator’s subjectivity and its influence on the translation works. The thesis introduces the fidelity and creative treason theories to analyze the two translators’subjectivity from the perspectives of the inner and outer forces. At last on the basis of the comparison study of the two versions from translation choice, culture background and style of creation, the thesis presents the influence of the translators’subjectivity on their translations from the perspectives of translator’s subjectivity, the advantages and disadvantages of each version and their own features.After the comparison, the thesis found that, Zhang Guruo mainly adopted domestication. His translation thought-"genuine original text, genuine translated text", was reflected in his version incisively and vividly. With a deep interpretation of the original and his profound knowledge of Chinese, he reproduced the original style almost perfectly. Especially his usage of Shandong dialect, made his version more creative and close to the style of the original. But Mr. Sun Fali’s version is inclined to foreignization and faithful to the original. His version retained "exoticism":he endeavored to remain the original order in sentence structure; his language was simple and plain and he transliterated most parts. So to the translation of the daily conversations, his words were not very fit for the characters of the original. However, he paid more attention to the details and his language was more accurate in those aspects.
