In recent years, chunk theory has been gradually recognized and widely used, especially in the field of teaching as a second language. The chunk teaching method is regarded as a new kind of language teaching concept and it highlighted the balance between language communicating and grammar teaching. Chunk Theory was first raised by Miller and Selfridge, Lewis furthered Miller and Selfridge’s study and raised idea of classification of chunk. It was the recent30years that the domestic recognized this teaching method. From the view of domestic Chinese teaching as second language, teachers are not applied this new method in teaching activities. In Chinese writing and oral Chinese classes may the chunk theory is applied, but seldom used in listening class. The paper thinks that listening ability is one of the four most important abilities (four kinds of language abilities are listening, speaking, reading and writing). To apply chunk teaching method in listening teaching activities can achieve a significant effect.The thesis contains four parts. Introduction part mainly discuss about the research purpose, innovation and the significance of the thesis. Chapter one is the research review of the chunk theory and its teaching method. In this part the thesis introduces the source of chunk theory, its classification and function. Chapter one also discusses the basic view of chunk theory and its psychology basis. Chapter two introduce the development of the listening teaching and grammar teaching method, memory theory and the application of Schema theory in listening teaching. In this part. the thesis further discusses the problems in listening teaching and the advantage of applying chunk theory in listening teaching and its possibility. Chapter Three discusses the use of chunk theory in listening teaching and case design. The analysis of chunk and the comparation of the three listening material are chosen from the first three volumes of "Chinese as a Foreign Language undergraduate textbook series Chinese Listening". The thesis makes the conclusion that the higher level of the material, the more widely chunk theory is applied. The author also designs a listening teaching case in detail to show how to apply chunk theory in listening teaching. From the mentioned case design, the thesis makes the conclusion that the possibility of application of chunk theory in listening teaching. Improving the consciousness of using chunk theory in teaching activities and training students to learn how to divide chunk can benefits their listening. At last, the thesis discusses the shortage of the chunk teaching method and the possible resolution.
