Gu qin ("Qin"、"Yaoqin"、"Qixianqin"), the oldest plucked string instrument in Chinese long cultural history, occupies a special and high status in traditional Chinese culture. For thousands years, qin and qin’s music has always been the tool for scholars to cultivate the body and mind, understand the Tao of the art of qin and enhance themselves. The gu qin headed the list of four subjects scholars trained themselves in along with chess, calligraphy and painting. Gu qin art is the outstanding representation of Chinese traditional culture and the aesthetic culture which contains unlimited elegant rhyme because of its broad oriental philosophy and aesthetic thought. It was cherished by people for its long history,vast literature, rich connotation and far-reaching impact. A qin unearthed in ZengHouyi’s tomb in Hubei Province2,400years ago. Many gu qi heritages were handed down from Tang and Song Dynasty to today. From Northern and Southern Dynasty to Qing Dynasty, there were more than one hundred kinds of qin anthologies and three thousand qin compositions, and extensive literatures about the artists of qin, the theories of qin, the manufacturing system of qin and qin art. The huge remains are most worthy among Chinese musical instruments. In old days, qin, chess, calligraphy and painting was used to summarize the traditional Chinese culture. A number of famous performers emerged in past dynasties. They were historical and cultural celebrities which eulogized from generation to generation.The guqin was also introduced into East Asian countries in Sui and Tang Dynasty and were learned and passed on by the traditional culture of these countries. With fine craftsmanship, ancient rhyme, the love emotion of a emperor, far-reaching cultural meaning, unique qin’s music theory and people’s tool of self-cultivation, gu qin’s music has a broad and mysterious research value and a deep roots of traditional Chinese art.
