On The Art Of Irony In Platonov’s The Fierce And Beautiful World

The paper aims to do a systematic research into Andrei Platonov’s anthology of stories The Fierce and Beautiful World. Based on close reading of the stories and the ironic rhetoric theories both in China and abroad, the study explores the art of ironic narrative of The Fierce and Beautiful World from the perspective of the fundamental elements of ironic theory. It mainly focuses on tremendous tension generated from the diction irony (including irony of narrative language, irony of soliloquies and irony of conversational language used among characters), irony of literary structure and irony of themes of the stories. In addition, the function and value of the rhetoric device of irony reflected in the stories are also explored. The paper is intended to expound Platonov’s connotative meaning, spiritual essence and the unique ironic arts included in his stories, so as to find an important and efficient way to the text analysis of Platonov’s stories.This paper is composed of six parts:The first part is introduction in which the author analyze and recite the current research situation of Platonov’s works.In second part, irony is explained in three aspects: historic changes, forms and styles.The third part contributes to explain the irony of language, irony of structure, irony of themes of the anthology stories The Fierce and Beautiful World and discusses the important role of irony in the character depiction, plot development, novel structure and main idea.In the fourth part, the author explores and discusses the source of the irony from two aspects: one is the society reason and the other is the character’s psychological cause.Aesthetic value of irony is discussed in the fifth part. Irony is not only an issue expression but also a kind of mode of thinking and outlook on life. Irony has been the most important part of intrinsic value of novel. And it becomes a normal create principle from figures of speech.The conclusion is given in the last part. We give a special opinion to know the way of how Platonov uses the irony. We know that different people have different understandings, we expect more and more people can understand and accept Platonov’s works.
