The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship betweenperceived parenting styles and development of adolescents’ intentional self regulation.A sample of240adolescents (97boys and147girls) aged13-24years completed thequestionnaires. Perceived parenting styles were determined by the Parental AuthorityQuestionnaire (PAQ) adapted by Buri,J.R.(1991). The Selection, Optimization andCompensation (SOC) Questionnaire (Freund&Baltes,2002) was used to measureintentional self-regulation. The results show that a relationship indeed exists betweenperceived parenting styles and the development of intentional self regulation inadolescence. Both authoritative/flexible and permissive parenting styles were found topromote selection and compensation of goals in adolescence. Permissive andauthoritative/flexible parenting styles of single mothers household were related tocompensation and selection in single fathers household. Permissive and flexibleparenting styles in biological parents were also found to promote selection whileauthoritarian parenting style in adoptive parents encouraged selection and negativelypromoted compensation. In terms of gender, there was no correlation found betweenboys’ perception of their parents’ parenting styles and development of intentionalself-regulation. But in girls, such correlation was found with permissive and flexibleassociated with development of selection and compensation.
