From China Processing To See The Development And Evolution Of Mu Shiying’s Novel Creation

Mu Shiying is a representative of the Chinese New Sensational School in the1930s, known as “the Saint of the Chinese New Sensational School” and “anOutstanding Proletariat Novelist”. Especially since the new century, part of thechapters of the unfinished novel China processing by Mu Shiying have begun to beendiscovered. And these chapters further shows his great ambition——creating a novelwhich will give a comprehensive description of the1931flood，dilapidated scene ofthe Chinese villages of1918eve and national capitalism struggles against theinternational capitalism in cities.The discovery of China processing has subverted our impression on stereotypesof Mu Shiying’s “foreign field prodigal son”, and gave us a new understanding of MuShiying’s literary ideals and creation. In this novel, we can see that Mu Shiying triedto achieve organic integration of three different types of novels he presented (theme ofurban, theme of village and theme of war), although the overall effect was barelysatisfactory. However, the efforts made by Mu Shiying was worthy of recognition. Itcan be said that China processing is a masterpiece of Mu Shiying’s novel creation interms of either subject or artistic techniques.This paper intends to start with the usual themes of Mu Shiying’s novel,systematically analyzes, compares China processing and Mu Shiying’s other novels inplot, character and artistic feature, in order to show the development and evolution ofMu Shiying’s novel creation. The first part will compare and analyze the theme ofurban, represented by three collections of short stories: Cemetery, A Female Statue ofPlatinum, The Feelings of the Holy Virgin, and parts of city life in China processingsuch as Season Dream in Shanghai, China1931. In the next part, the author comparesthe works in rural theme, represented by south poles and north poles and uncollectedshort stories such as Prison Squealing, with China1931, Pastoral Scenery which arewith relevant subject in China processing. The third part conducts a comparisonbetween The HIMA Major and Our Generation in China processing, both of whichare novels of war. In order to make a fair evaluation of artistic achievement andhistorical value to China processing, in the last part, the paper makes a reference toMidnight, which is share similar subject with China processing and directly impact on the creation of China processing, thus, by comparison, artistic achievements andcreative limitations of China processing are highlighted.
