| As to the severe inconsistency problems in C-E translation of banking proper names, this thesis tries to analyze those inconsistent problems from the perspective of Skopos Theory and puts forward effective translation countermeasures for standardization. With the Skopos Theory as the theoretical foundation, this thesis analyzes the text type, function and translation brief of banking proper names, and proposes the A-B-C translation principle (Apprehensibility, Brevity and Consistency) for evaluating the consistency in C-E translation of banking proper names. The thesis chooses banking proper names of17banks in China as samples and12foreign banks as parallel text, from which48typical examples are categorized into4types of inconsistency:(1) personal deposit names (2) personal loan names (3) bank’s department names (4) bank’s awards and honorary titles. After in-depth analysis, the modified translated text is proposed for each exampleSome tentative countermeasures arc also proposed as:being consistent with international practice; tracing the original version from China’s authoritative financial organizations and institutions; unifying the personal deposit and loan product names by translation formula--adj.(feature)+n.(deposit type),n.(deposit type)+with+n.(method/feature) for personal deposit: n.(feature)+for+n.(purpose),n.(ledge Loan)+under+n.(collateral) for personal loan products; cultural equivalency for Chinese culture image; fuzzification for political information and Chinese cliche. |
