A Contrastive Discourse Analysis Of Interpersonal Function In Chinese And English Pharmaceutical Instructions

The functionality of the languages is always the best and most importantrepresentative of the social character of sociolinguistics. In recent years, thefunctionality of the languages gradually becomes lots of linguists’ research focus inthe field of linguistics.As the core of the Systematic-Functional Linguistics, its language theorybecomes one of the most influential linguistic theories in the second half of20thcentury. Based on the theory of Firth in London School and also the StructuralFunctionalism, M. A. K. Halliday puts forward the Systematic-Functional Grammar,which includes the systematic grammar and the functional grammar. Above all, thebest achievement that Systematic-Functional Linguistics makes is the threeMeta-functions, namely Ideational Function, Interpersonal Function and TextualFunction.In this paper, based on the functionality of Systematic-Functional Grammar, theauthor will compare30Chinese and30English pharmaceutical instructions from theangle of Interpersonal Function. And this thesis will try to figure out the differentways between Chinese and English pharmaceutical instructions to realizeInterpersonal Function. Besides, by contrast, Discourse Analysis on30Chinese and30English pharmaceutical instructions will be done to find the reasons and causes forthe differences.Finally, by combining with translation methods, this paper is trying to find moresuitable and practical strategy to do the pharmaceutical instructions translationbetween Chinese and English. What’s more, our Chinese pharmaceutical instructionscan be localized, and it is the same with English pharmaceutical instructions. In theend, our patients can read and understand their pharmaceutical instructions rightly andaccurately. Then, the real practical significance of bringing benefits to our patients canbe realized in this paper.
