The Style Equivalence In The Translation Of The Novel The Finkler Question Based On The Theory Of Functional Equivalence

"The Finkler Questior" written by the British writer Howard Jacobson has won the Man Booker Prize in2010. This novel reveals the life of Jews in London and discusses the issues of anti-Semitism. The novel has been considered as comic for its funny, humorous and ironic language, however, what the author tries to convey to the readers is a serious problem-Jews and anti-Semitism in nowadays London. This requires the translator not only to be honest and faithful to the style of the original language, but also to be exactly showing the theme of this novel.Based on the translation of Chapter4and Eugene Nida’s theory of functional equivalence, this paper discusses how to convey the original style of the novel in target language and achieve style equivalence through analysis of translations of conversations between characters, descriptive and narrative words in the novel.
