The Song Dynasty government had been playing the role of guide in the city’scultural entertainment activities. Emperors of Song Dynasty had been hoping thatpeople can be under their thought control through this conscious guidance, and usedthe outstanding representative of the city’s cultural activities to implement their rulingideas, for the purpose of consolidating imperial authority. During the reign of SongGaozong,the government rebuilt belief system through sacrificial and religiousactivities, furthermore, used the political participation of students in Imperial Collegeand warned powerful officials by Pro mock the current politics. All these are for thepurpose of a recurrence of "ancestor’s law" and consolidating imperial authority.The paper is made up of three parts:Part one analysis Song Gaozong’s activities in control of belief systems. Afterthe establishment of the Southern Song regime, by means of restoration of sacrificialrituals in south outskirt, Song Gaozong proclaimed the legitimacy of his rule andestablished the official orthodoxy. Then built or renovated temples and brought folkbeliefs into official fete system with the purpose of elevating himself to a godlikestatus. While the folk secret religions were suppressed, be regarded as heresies. Allthis were means to control the minds of the people and magnify the rationality ofimperial power.Part two discusses reasons why Song Gaozong rebuilt Imperial College andfostered students in it. During the Southern Song Dynasty, students in ImperialCollege owned a more prominent social status and usually united withscholar-officials, so they can control the public opinions inside and outside court.Furthermore, students in Imperial College can express their political intentions via VQue petition. Therefore, they had a considerable political force. In the early period ofSong Gaozong’s reign, his government was not steady, so he practiced a policy ofsuppressing students. But when the Southern Song Dynasty regime was steady, SongGaozong wanted to contain powerful ministers by making use of public opinion, so hefostered students in Imperial College as an important power to consolidate imperial authority.Part three is an analysis of reasons why high-society headed by Song Gaozongconnived at Pro mock the current politics of artists. During the Song Dynasty, city’scultural entertainment activity was prevailing, into which upper rulers were alsointegrated. So, in this environment, artists had a broad stage and they expressedemerging urban class’ views about political phenomena by means of Pro mock thecurrent politics. Emperors of Song Dynasty thought of this Pro mock the currentpolitics as the will of the people, and connived at some overblown of artists as ameans of warning powerful officials.These political means of Song Gaozong, to some extent, were inheritance andpromotion of the "ancestor’s law", reflected the close attention of emperors of SongDynasty to spirit culture activities and the rule strategy of “The thing to prevent, songs offor system”.
