On China English And Chinglish From Linguistic And Culture Theory

It is generally acknowledged that English is the most widely used language in the world, for it has played the role as a bridge to contribute to exchange among countries. Meanwhile, many English varieties spring up due to different nations with different cultures where English has spread, such as American English, Australian English, South African English and Singapore English, etc. As English came to China about200years ago, with opening-up policy pushing forward communications with foreign countries on politics, economy and culture, there are more and more Chinese begin to learn and speak English in order to hear the world and to be heard.The interaction of Chinese and western cultures causes the invention of China English, some of which has been enlisted in vocabulary of Standard English. On the other side, the cultural diversity leads to Chinglish that is ill-formed English. Both domestic and foreign scholars have been studying the two linguistic phenomena from various perspectives, including linguistics, language and culture.Based on definitions of China English and Chinglish, the author analyzes and discusses the sources and characteristics, the present and the future according to several linguistic theories such as Globalization and Localization of English, English Variety, Interlanguage, Linguistic Transfer Theory, Linguistic Adaptation Theory and relevant language and culture knowledge.China English, one of English varieties surviving in the linguistic deviation, is the fusion of Chinese and western culture. It shows distinctive features in phonetics, morphology, syntax, discourse and emotion. As for Chinglish, interfered by Chinese features, it is unidiomatic English in both oral and written form.The research is to pave the way to give weight to China English and to phase out Chinglish. In fact, the transformation from Chinglish to China English could attain, and benefits the precise spread of Chinese culture. To promote China English is to enrich English vocabulary and other forms; on the other hand, bearing rich Chinese culture, it strengthens the smart power of China and enhances the international status.
