With the deepening of globalization, China’s tourism industry has made giantstrides over the past few years. The fact that a growing number of foreign tourists arepouring in has issued a grim challenge to China’s C-E tourism translation. C-Etourism translation is responsible for popularizing national cultures as well aspromoting the development of China’s tourism industry and thus has arousedwidespread attention. Most of domestic researches on this topic treat it the same wayas other types of translation in an indiscriminate way, employing classic but irrelevanttheories as if scratching the surface of the issue. Others even take it lightly withoutreferring to any translation theory, simply pointing out the same old mistakes andmodifying them grammatically and syntactically. All of them are vain attempts toimprove C-E tourism translation.Functional translation theory, unique as it is, has established an indissoluble bondwith the translation of texts for practical use since its birth. Text types and functionsare paid much attention. The tourist text coincidentally has both informative functionand expressive function, complying with the functional translation theory. Therefore,we are enlightened to work out strategies that serve the two functions simultaneously.This paper does not get stuck in the rut of the predecessors who have conductedexcessive case studies. Instead, it has made a systematic classification of the types oftourist texts, i.e. names of scenic spots, informative tourist texts and expressive touristtexts. The categorization connects the topic with functional translation theory and canpossibly lead us to acceptable strategies. Methods of amplification, annotation,paraphrase and adaptation are suggested in coping with translation of landscapenames; informative and expressive tourist texts are advised to make adaptations intranslation, but in varying degrees, namely, micro adaptation and macro adaptation.Universally valid strategies have almost been realized in the paper.
