This thesis will focus on the Urtiin Duu music of the ethnicMongolians in Subei Mongol Autonomous County. Using a combinationof techniques from musicology and ethnomusicology, there will be anindepth analysis of Subei Urtiin Duu music and Urtiin Duu singing,discussing the style’s, history, cultural environment, characteristics, vocaltechniques, heritage and future development. Studies have shown thatUrtiin Duu in Subei Mongol Autonomous County has developed in a waydistinct from other forms of Urtiin Duu and requires a particularlyspecialised singing technique. This is due to the unique history andgeography of the Subei region, as well as the influence of neighbouringethnic groups, especially Tibetans. Therefore, Subei Urtiin Duu musicand Urtiin Duu singing provides a particularly interesting subject foranalysis and is of great relevance to development and heritage of the art ofUrtiin Duu as a whole.This paper is divided into3sections: an introduction, a main body anda conclusion. The main body is further broken down into5parts:Part1: Consists of a discussion of the history, geography and cultureof the Subei region and how these relate to the origins of Subei Urtiin Duuand the development of local customs and practices.Part2: Analyses the melody and flowing vocal style of Subei UrtiinDuu, as well as the deep influence that Tibetan music and culture has had.Part3: Looks into the skills required to perform Urtiin Duu, and alsomakes a comparison of both the Subei and Inner Mongolia varieties ofUrtiin Duu. There is also a musicological analysis of the timbre and vocaltechniques that make Subei Urtiin Duu unique. This section concludeswith a summary of the Subei Urtiin Duu style.Part4: Using a combination of techniques from knowledge of singingthere will be an indepth analysis of Subei Urtiin Duu’s vocalisation. Part5: Looks at issues concerning the development Subei Urtiin Duuand concerns over its passing on to younger generations. First there is alook at Batum ngke, the man associated most closely with this form ofmusic, as well as a mention of the contribution he has made to Subei UrtiinDuu. Finally there will be a discussion of what the future might hold forthe Subei variety of Urtiin Duu and what methods can be used to ensurethis unique art form is passed on to future generations.
