A Study Of The Creative Consciousness In Thomas Wolfe’s Novels

The novels by Thomas Wolfe which have formed his unique style, have a huge impact on later generations and occupy an important position in the history of American literature. This paper firstly studies of Thomas Wolfe’s creative consciousness in his novels, in order to dig a strong racial consciousness, time consciousness and regional consciousness and watch thinking and insights of Thomas Wolfe for personal, social and human destiny in his novels. This paper use three parts, included the introduction, text and epilogue, to describe Thomas Wolfe’s creative consciousness.The preface provides an overview of Thomas Wolfe’s life and works, as well as domestic and foreign research status, which leads to the topic of this paper, the topic briefly analyzes three kinds of consciousness in Thomas Wolfe’s novels and expound the significance to study the consciousness of Thomas Wolfe’s novels and the innovation of this paper.The body of the paper is divided into three chapters, based on Thomas Wolfe’s full-length novels, which specifically explain the connotation, the causes and the value that the three kinds of consciousness deepen and improve the connotation of the novels.The first chapter writes Thomas Wolfe’s racial consciousness of the novels. We will introduce the background of Thomas Wolfe to depict fortunate fate of the southern black, discuss the cause of racial consciousness in Thomas Wolfe’s novels and analyze Thomas Wolfe’s ambivalence which was influenced by the southern culture in America, that is, racial consciousness is the collective unconscious of all southern writers.The second chapter writes Thomas Wolfe’s time consciousness of the novels. This chapter from the three aspects of "space time","psychological time" and "eternity time", explore the journey of the heart of Thomas Wolfe that the first time feel the helpless for the time goes by and the hard and ruthless of the "space time", to rely on imagination to link past, present and future together, realize the psychological comfort of the "psychological time" bringing, finally beyond time, obtain the "eternal time". The third chapter writes Thomas Wolfe’s regional consciousness of the novels. On the one hand, we will analyze the root of his regional consciousness from Thomas Wolfe’s growth environment, social and historical conditions and background of the Southern Renaissance. On the other hand, respectively as the clues with the growth experiences of the protagonists in the novels to explain Thomas Wolfe’s the contradiction between love and hate feelings for homeland.Through the above analysis and elaboration, which can be concluded that the family environment, living environment and social environment which Thomas Wolfe lived in, determine his creative consciousness of racial consciousness, time consciousness and regional consciousness. These three kinds of creative consciousness make his novels have the historical massiness and universal values and show his ultimate pursuit for the ideals of the nation and the value of the entire human.
