This is a translation project report of the first and second chapter of ModernChina:A Very Short Introduction, which is written by Rana· Mitter. Those twochapters mainly discuss the definition of modern China and the process of changefrom old to new in the past one hundred years. These two chapters list numerousexamples to explain the definition of modernism as well as the development of Chinain the last hundred years. The author intends to explain the problems and challengesin the process of Chinese modernism with his unique Western view and also by thecomparison of modern history between China and Western countries. In this part, dueto the different thinking style of Westerner, it is inevitable to be confronted with thetranslation difficulties. The object of this translation project is to properly and justreproduce author’s understanding of China with an acceptable version to Chinese.With the guide of the Interpretive Theory of Translation and the use of translationstrategies like domesticating translation and so on, this project intends to make thelanguage more smooth and close to the source texts as well as help readers understandit.Besides, much more attention should be paid to the history examples by checkingthe history books related to Chinese history.The project report mainly has those four parts: firstly, the introduction of thetranslation project report including its background, target, meaning and structure;secondly, the theoretical basis and a short introduction of the author and so on; thirdly,difficulties and solutions; fourthly, a summary of experience, lessons and shortagesduring the translation process.
