With the development of the science and technology and the economy in China, thenumber of the learners of Chinese language from all over the world is going up. However,though they have mastered the basic use of Chinese language to varying degrees, thecommunication problems due to the cultural differences and even the cultural conflicts stillexist. Vocabulary teaching, as the basis of language teaching, plays an important role inteaching Chinese. Vocabulary as the root of language has a close connection with culturaltradition. Therefore, integrating the cultivation of cross-cultural awareness of the learnersinto Chinese vocabulary teaching is an important mean for learners to understand andreduce the cultural differences. It can finally promote the cross-cultural communicativecompetence of the learners. It is the key to the success of teaching Chinese to the speakersof other languages. This paper is based on two different perspectives---“Teaching” and“learning”. Respectively from students’ learning and teachers’ teaching, the paper discussesthe significance of integrating the cultivation of cross-cultural awareness into teachingChinese and introduces some methods on how to put it into practice.
