The history of literature actually is the history of the intellectual’s fate, and thehistorical intension, such as politics, economy, culture and ethics, enriches, enlarges andhighlights the intension of intellectual’s fate, which continually becomes the alienationobject of historical study in the form of the literary gene and development. As the subjectof the cultural producing and inherit, the intellectuals, which count on their uniquecharacters and complex group implications, always carry on the thoughtful mission relatedto the ultimate direction of human being’s fate.In recent years, research into the images of intellectuals has become popular inhistorical, sociological, political, and communication studies. The present study is focusedon the images of intellectuals in fictional narrations of the last thirty years and the study isemphasized on the double-mirrored intellectual images produced in historical andcontemporary narrations. The study aims to explore the esthetical values of such fictionalnarrations in different periods and clarify the comprehensive nature of the historicaltransitions and self-reconstructions of the intellectual images in these narrations. Thepresent research also distinguishes the detailed relations of the literary images, productions,and distributions to explore the external and internal influences on the bodies of creationbrought by the historical contexts and their own subjectivities. Focused on the culturallycontextualized fictional narrations in the periods of1980s,1990s, and the21stcentury, thisstudy uses the methodologies of New Criticism and image analysis to conduct amulti-dimensional examination of the changes of the esthetical nature of the intellectual images and presents their status, spirits, and experiences in the fictional narrations. In thisway, the study provides a double reflection of “history and contemporary” on the socialroles and values of Chinese intellectuals.
