| Bai Juyi was a famous poet in Tang Dynasty. The content and the artistic style of his poetry creation were closely related to his life experiences and had undergone major changes with the changes in his life. His demotion to Jiangzhou had an undoubtedly significant impact on his thinking and creation. Before this demotion,"the allegory poem" is one of the main types of Bai’s poetry, which highlighted his ambition of "saving China" by pointing out social problems and reflecting the prevailing social reality with upright wording. His demotion to Jiangzhou left him a sudden setback in his political ideals. The uncontrollable anger due to the injustice exile and the melancholic sentiments of sadness diffused deep in Bai Juyi’s thoughts and showed in his writings, which resulted in his later different theme and creative style. A lot of "sentimental poems" and "leisure poems" replaced his early "allegory poems". After many vicissitudes and a profound realization of the social and life philosophy and personal life taste, he wrote a large number of works reflecting "contentment, security and playful temperament". These works were filled with the feelings of preserving his own purity and integrity. His creative style was also transferred from "being passionate" to "being quiet". The change in Bai Juyi’s creative thinking as well as his later creation contains the poet’s philosophical concept of "retreat" in his later life and this concept has had a great impact on China’s feudal scholars and officials. So, the study of Bai Juyi’s creative life in Jiangzhou makes it possible to completely understand the poet’s life and to sort out the overall course and trend of the development of Bai Juyi’s thought. |
