In the current era of portable devices, most of the devices are battery operated and majority of the electronic circuits used inside the devices are implemented in CMOS technology. With the CMOS technology continuously evolving, the minimum transistor sizes are further scaling down to increase the processing speeds, which place more challenges to improve the efficiency of the battery. In this paper, a new Buck step down converter integrated in a SOC is introduced. It is a voltage control based buck converter, combined with both voltage feedforward and voltage feedback technology. Meanwhile, the buck converter is a dual-mode control converter so as to maintain high efficiency when the load current varies during a wide range. We focus mainly on the light load condition case, then analyze the control scheme in detail. Besides, the feedforward method is discussed as well.In this paper, first we discuss the trend of the switching converter. Then we analyze the basic work principle of the buck converter focusing mainly on the light load condition case, then analysis the control scheme in detail. The compensation scheme is discussed later. The simulation results are showed. At last, layouts and tests of the chip is showed, which met the original design object well.
