Yin And Yang Five Elements Of Traditional Chinese Medicine Basic Terms Of The Comparison Of The English Translation Criteria

Purpose:Standardization is one of the most important subjects facing today’s TCM (traditonal Chinese medicine) field. The standardization of TCM translation, as its integral part, is the impetus that promotes its development and the basic to win an international recognition for TCM per se. Only when the TCM including its translation is standardized can the scientific development of it be well-driven. This research benefits the translation of basicTCM terminology in its completion, promotes its theoretical study, does good to the international teaching and communication, and avails the scientific researches.Method:This study, through the analysis on five standards including National Standards of Peoples Republic of China:the Basic Theory Terminology of Traditional Chinese Medicine GB/T20348-2006, Chinese Terms in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy, English Translation of Common Terms in Traditional Chinese Medicine, International Standard Chinese-English Basic Nomenclature of Chinese Medicine and Standard Terminologies on Traditional Medicine in the Western Pacific Region, summarizes135terminologies of yin-yang and five elements in basic theory of TCM. Then the comparision study of them among these standards is made.Conclusion:1. The standardization of TCM terminology should be fulfilled with deep theoretical study. In this paper, I, with satisfactory effect achieved, tried to apply the double-branch method to analyze the grammar and functional structure of the Chinese terminology by splitting the morphemes and determining the functional focuses, and also to find and set up the English counterpart for every specific structure of Chinese language. In doing so, some terminologies that is difficult in translation i s well-rendered, and the standard of TCM translation is specified to the most basic details. Then I develop the triple-branch method, considering that a considerable part of TCM terminologies are languages rather than phrases, which provides new direction for further researches.2. The standardization of TCM terminology should be fulfilled with cutting-edge academic perspectives. In this paper, I tried to refer to the most advanced international standard for terminology formulation-ISO704, recognized principles for terminology translation in translation field, the reasonable theories in TCM translation field and my own proposals to set up a systematic standard for evaluating and establishing TCM terminology.3. The standardization of TCM terminology is fulfilled with the summarization of both experience and the fault we used to make, in case the accumulation of mistakes. In this paper, I listed and analyzed the unreasonable renderings in each of the five standards.4. I listed the135terminologies gained from this comparative research in the format of data sheet as another conclusion.
