With abundant clinical experience, he has formed his unique theoretical system of diagnosis and treatment of rheumatism.Arthralgia is a kind of disease with pain, numbness, swelling, limitation of motion and even deformity of the limb joints as the major clinical manifestation. It is a kind of systemic chronic disease, which may involve various zang-fu organs and tissues. Its etiology is associated with genetic, infectious, dietary and environmental factors. The diseases, known in western medicine as AS, RA, OA, SLE, DM, PM, SSc, PSS, rheumatic fever, osteoporosis and gouty arthritis all could be treated as TCM arthralgia based on syndrome differentiation.In terms of the etiology and pathogenesis of arthralgia, my supervisor thinks that deficiencies of healthy qi is the internal basis of occurrence of arthralgia, which include disharmony between ying and wei, dysfunction of the internal organs and etc.. External contraction of pathogenic wind, cold, damp and heat, phlegm-turbidity or blood stasis are the critical pathogenic factors of arthralgia; meanwhile, emotional disorder and improper diet may also result in arthralgia. Moreover, enduring illness is likely to cause deficiency and stagnation. So. my supervisor puts forward that kidney deficiency and blood stasis is one of the important etiology and pathogenesis of arthralgia.Kidney deficiency and blood stasis have close relations physiologically and pathologically, which play important roles in the occurrence, development, transformation and prognosis of arthralgia. Kidney is the root of innate endowment and the organ of water and fire, governing the original yin of the body, which is one of the most important substances of life activities. The occurrence of althralgia is more likely based on kidney deficiency. Meanwhile, kidney deficiency and blood stasis are important pathogenic changes of althralgia, which interact on each other and mutually transform. That is why my supervisor follows the theory of "There is blood stasis in arthralgia." which was put forward by Wang Qingren of Qing Dynasty in Correction on the Errors of Medical Works, and pays attention to the application of activating blood and resolving stasis.3.My supervisor’s experiences of applying the therapy of strengthening kidney and activating blood to treatment of familiar rheumatism.The therapy of strengthening kidney and activating blood is to combine strengthening kidney and activating blood dynamically, with the effect of balancing yin and yang and reinforcing the healthy and eliminating the pathogenic. Althralgia has various clinical manifestations, with deficiency and excess blending together. Clinically, my supervisor insists that "disease diagnosis and syndrome differentiation should be combined, referred to based on different stages and syndromes". While treating rheumatism, the therapy of strengthening kidney and activating blood, have both similarities and different usages according to the characteristics of various diseases. In general, the prescriptions my supervisor used often are Zuogui Pill, Yougui Pill, Liuwei Dihuang Pill, Qing’e Pill, Erzhi Pill, Duhuo Jisheng Decoction and Shentong Zhuyu Decoction. His therapeutic principles are mainly tonifying kidney and reinforcing du, promoting blood circulation to remove meridian obstruction, tonifying liver and kidney, expelling wind and activating blood, enriching yin and nourishing kidney, cooling blood and eliminating stasis, warming kidney and invigorating spleen, activating blood circulation to remove blood stasis, supplementing qi and nourishing yin and removing heat from the blood and toxic from the body. AS, RA, OA, SLE are the common rheumatic diseases. This essay summarizes systematically my supervisor’s clinical experiences of applying the therapy of strengthening kidney and activating blood to treatment of common rheumatisms, which are illustrated and analyzed precisely with typical cases.
