| The traditional Chinese medicine "Shi Hu", derived from the dried or fresh stems of several Dendrobium species (Orchidaceae), are widely used as a Yin tonic to nourish the stomach and promote the production of body fluid. Of which, Dendrobium candidum Wall. ex Lindl. is one of the most famous one and has been recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2005 Edition) as one of the original materials of "Shi Hu".In our systematical study on the chemical constituents of Dendrobium candidum,19 compounds were obtained from the water extract of the stems of this plant through various chromatographic techniques. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of physico-chemical property and spectroscopic analysis. The 19 compounds from Dendrobium candidum are (E)-p-hydroxy cinamic acid (1),p-hydroxyphenylpropionic acid (2), coniferyl alcohol (3), vanillyl alcohol (4), syringaresinol (5),4-allyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenyl glucoside (6), N-trans-feruloyl tyramine (7), N-cis-feruloyl tyramine (8),N-cis-feruloyl tyramine (9), 4’,5-dihydroxy-3,3’-dimethoxybibenzyl (10), naringenin (11), vicenin-3 (12), isoschaftoside (13), schaftoside (14), vicenin-2 (15), apigenin 6,8-di-C-a-L-arabinopyranoside (16), apigenin 6-C-β-D-xylopyranosyl-8-C-a-L-arabinopyranoside(17), apigenin 6-C-a-L-arabinopyranosyl-8-C-β-D-xylopyranoside (18) and vicenin-1 (19), respectively. Compounds 1,3,4,6-9,12-19 were isolated for the first time from the Dendrobium genus and all compounds except compound 10 were isolated from this plant for the first time. The chromatographic fingerprints of the water extract of Dendrobium candidum and its EtOAc soluble fraction and n-BuOH soluble fraction were studied by reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and the main peaks of the chromatographic fingerprints were also identified. The investigation enriched the constituents of Dendrobium candidum and established a good basis for the further quality control of the raw material and the production of Dendrobium candidum. |
