Simultaneous interpreting, also known as conference interpreting, just as its nameimplies, is a kind of interpretation that requires the interpreter do his or her job withoutinterrupting the speaker. In the world, many scholars regard the simultaneous interpretingas the most difficult kind of interpretation. In order to accomplish the top work, manyinterpreters have come up with various strategies and skills that are of help in their trainingand work from their experiences and practices. On theoretical level, Theorie du Sens by Seleskovitch, The Effort Models by Gile andAdaptive Control of Thoughts by Anderson are the three most influential ones. Onpractical level, predecessors have put forward six basic principles of simultaneousinterpreting such as syntactic linearity, adjustment, anticipation, reformulation, simplification and information equivalence. This paper, based on the interpreting task of Joseph Biden’s speech on U.S.-Chinarelation, focuses on the application of syntactic linearity in English to Chinesesimultaneous interpretation. First, this paper elaborates the meaning and value of syntacticlinearity; secondly, this paper analyzes the necessity and feasibility of syntactic linearityfrom several aspects; thirdly, this paper summarizes some difficulties in the application ofsyntactic linearity; finally, this paper comes up with three methods to realize syntacticlinearity. In the light of the preference of MTI, the understanding, analysis and application ofsyntactic linearity derive from the self training. It involves a little pure theory.
