Yu Shuyan Singing Aesthetics Research

As a brilliant work of old male role with beard, the enduring art form, Yu Shuyan’s vocal music of opera not only has a standard vocal system , but also makes a good start for the promising younger generation for innovation. Scholars for his singing art research, however, put more emphasis on the morphology analysis of his individual arias. With few discussions from the aesthetic aspect , it is too vague and is not easy for us to understand. So in this paper, with his masterpiece" search orphan and save orphan " for example, the author from the micro aspect, tries to makes an conclusion of the common aesthetic characteristics of the singing art form with the decent articulation and phonating with words of Yu’s singing skills. And then reflect his affective connotation from his singing.In this article, with the Methodology of music historiography, music morphology, music aesthetics and comparative analysis, the author makes an analysis of Yu Shuyan’s vocal music of opera from three aspects. Firstly, Yu ’s diligently pursuit for art has a great influence on his art style. So in this paper the author divided his art period into four parts, among which the play "search orphan and save orphan" ,created during Yu’s heyday, represents the essence and primary characteristic of Yu’s vocal music of opera. Secondly, due to the difference of styles and versions, there are some subtle differences in melody, rhythm, and meters layout of the epitasis and emotion conflict. so it is necessary to analyses the music morphology of this work. Finally, the author makes a conclusion of the connotation of“From”and“Spirit”from the aesthetics aspect. first is the creation form of“natural beauty”. It’s discussed from the aspect of the formal beauty in singing skills, the second is the performances spirit of "vivid ". Yu is good at performing positive tragic characters, but he prefers to show different characters with limited skills. So in this case, we can see his superb performance and the state of the combination of“Spirit”and“Form”.
