In the middle of the nineteenth century, western powers began to race to control the world market after entering into the free capitalism stage. China and Japan, which were both in seclusion, could hardly escape the fate of being invaded forcibly.After suffering from foreign invasion and unequal treaties signed with western powers, the two countries both formed semi-colony structures. How to change this situation and grasp the beneficial international situation to carve the way to economic development and industrialization is a common task the two countries had to face. However, the two countries’paths of modernization were strikingly different. In the process of modernization, China and Japan went distinct ways, even opposite in some aspects.After that, China had more than one hundred years’history of humiliation, but Japan went on the way to aggression and expansion. Facing with similar situations but making different choices. What factors have led to the final result? All these problems need further analysis.First, the article starts with the powers’invasion, the formation of unequal treaty systems in the two countries. Second, it states the courses of modifying unequal treaties by the two governments.third, it analyses the deep reasons which hidden behind the success and failure in modernization,from the social and cultural form, the national consciousness, the attitude of the ruling class, properties of treaties and resistance to modify treaties carry. Future more, it discusses influences on the progress of modernization, the changes of East Asia’s relationship in modern times. Self-examination on history helps us to understand clearly the gap between the two countries, through knowing this can we shorten the gap as soon as possible, and do better to face the future.
