It is commonly known that South Korean high school students learning Chinesecharacters have a basic cognitive understanding of the language. Though that may bethe case, students discover acquiring actual Chinese character proficiency is muchmore complicated. Because their familiarity of Chinese characters is from the SouthKorean education’s edification of the language, students are often too confident withtheir character creating abilities. This confidence allows them to ignore the truecharacteristics of Chinese characters and will lead them down a road filled withmistakes. Without the proper teaching counter measures, South Korean high schoolsstudents will continue to meet learning Chinese characters with more difficulty. While research is low for Korean Chinese character teaching, information forChinese character teaching to high school students in South Korea is even less. Inview of this, the author, devised a learning questionnaire survey based on studies ofhis own classroom teaching experience. We designed two sets for the survey, one forSouth Korean high school students and one for Chinese teachers. Analysis of thequestionnaires revealed the South Korean students’ problems in the way Chinesecharacter comprehension was taught and noted differences between the teachers andstudents’ understanding of the language. Then we tried to find the reasons fromteaching, learning and social factors lead to the problems. The specific operational procedures are: Firstly, according to Jiangxin, Zhaoguo(2001)"the primary stage foreign students learning strategies of Chinese charactersinvestigation" and etc. to design questionnaire parts which students learning Chinesecharacters questionnaire and teachers teaching questionnaire.Secondly, we investigated300high school students and eight teachers from7high school in Seoul from March2011to September2011, to check their level oflearning and teaching Chinese characters.Thirdly, according to the results of the survey, it is concluded that the situation oflearning and teaching Chinese characters exists the following problems:1. Thestudents are confused with Chinese characters class and Korean characters class;andthey chose the wrong way to improve their Chinese characters level.2. The Chineseteachers are lack of communication with each other, and are lack of feedback as well.3. The teachers and the students have different opinions about teaching methodsand learning methods.Fourthly, we tried to find the reasons of the problems through teaching, learningand social factors. lead to the problems.Last but not the least, tried to supply some practical advices to solve the Chinesecharacters teaching and learning problems, and establish the best teaching mode.
