Chinese contemporary oil painting was born in the1980s and came of age together with the Reform and Opening up process. As it moves into prosperity in the21st century, fresh problems emerge. Currently, the majority of oil painting practitioners were born in the1980s and this group has become a new driving force of the art. What are the essential qualities this group needs in order to capture the core Chinese values and to acquire classic painting techniques? The paper first sets out to define and analyze the crisis of the contemporary art; it then attempts to explore the essential qualities of a good oil painter in terms of their artistic competence development, the western classic painting spirit and their trend of creation. The paper ends with the conclusion that the painters born in the1980s shouldn’t be too obsessed about their own individuality but respect and learn from the western classics. Only in this way, can the young oil painting artiest blaze a new path in the future.
