In psychology and neuroscience, working memory plays an important role in theprocessing of many higher cognitive functions. And the significance of the emotionalalso sparked the interest of the majority of researchers due to the meaning in practicesand ecological. Therefore, the studies about the interaction between working memoryand emotion have been reached the focus. However, it was difficult to evaluate theinteraction and the relationship between them. The study based brain mechanisms canhelp us to get a fundamental understanding and, to some extent, provide a newperspective for emotional distress, mental health and counseling. In this study on N-Back working memory paradigm we used the emotional picturesto explore the interaction between the working memory and emotion. The results arefollowing:1. The effect of working memory load. Compared the lower demanding0-back, thehigher demanding2-back tasks significantly raised more activation in the both sides ofthe inferior Frontal Gyrus, middle Frontal Gyrus and superior Parietal Lobule, the leftinferior Temporal Gyrus showed significant differences in the brain activation (FDR=0.05). This finding suggests that complex task cognitive task raised more activation thansimple task in some areas, which consistent with many earlier studies.2. Furthermore, the adjusted function of emotion appeared. First, significantlyactivation appeared in the right side of the Limbic system and Precentral Gurys duringthe contrast of Positive vs. Neutral. Second, in comparison to Neutral, the negative alsoevoked more activation in the right Inferior Parietal Lobule and the right Middle FrontalGyrus. Lastly, the Negative showed stronger activation in the right Inferior ParietalLobule compared to the Positive.(p=0.001, cluster size=150).3. The adjustment of working memory in emotion. Under2-back conditions, theactivations were found in the bilateral Sub-Gyral, the right Middle Temporal Gyrus, theleft Middle Temporal Gyrus, and the left Precuneus during Positive and in the rightPrecuneus, Middle Frontal Gyrus, Precentral Gyrus and the Sub-Gyral during Negative. When the working memory load increased, the experience and processing on emotionslacked.(FDR=0.05).In this study, we explored the mutual influence and the relationship of workingmemory and emotion under the specific characteristics of the scene and try to provide anew way for the next study. In addition, this study maybe can provide somephysiological basis for mental health and counseling and has a certain theoretical andpractical significance.
