Cijue Zongze was an important monk in Song Dynasty, and thisdissertation will research him from three major parts:The first part is a thorough study of Zongze’s life experience. Basingon a careful research and sorting out of relevant of Zongze, thedissertation does a new research on the biographies and works ofZongze and summarizes the information, in particular, the temporalinformation about Zongze’s birth and death, and the plain sequencefor and the plain sequence for his abbots career.The second part is a research about Chanyuan Qinggui written byZongze which is the oldest Qinggui text existing in China and exertedgreat influence on the formation and development of the ChineseBuddhist Sangha management system and the Ritual managementsystem in Song and Yuan Dynasty. Taking the Chinese Buddhist Riteswhich are generally put into two categories: Buddhist self-cultivation riteand offering-food-to-monk rite (the Zhaigong Rite) whose core elementis the offering purpose (zhaiyi) as the proposed research approach, thedissertation explores and analyzes the text of Chanyuan Qinggui,finding out thirteen offering-food-to-monk rites and investigating theclassification and procession of each one of them. Based upon such astudy, the dissertation tried to establish a research paradigm: Firstly,taking the offering purpose (zhaiyi) which is also synonymous to theZhouyuan, d ā na (Dachen), the lighting joss stick&spelling(Xingxiangzhouyuan), the highly praising Buddha&spelling(Tanfozhouyuan), the reciting texts (Biaobai), Alamkāraka (Zhuangyan),the distributing merits (Huixiang) and prārthanā (Fayuan) as a pointcut,finding out the offering-food-to-monk rite (the Zhaigong Rite) in thetarget text of Qinggui; Secondly, referring the general classificationprocedure of the offering-food-to-monk rite (the Zhaigong Rite), analyzing the procession of the target rite. If we can understand theoffering-food-to-monk rite (the Zhaigong rite) hidden in the texts ofQinggui more clearly, we will gain deeper insights into the ChineseBuddhism history.The third part is a new checking and punctuating about theRecorded Sayings of Chan Master Cijue, which is an importantemerging literature, and this record will facilitate the academicresearch in the future.
